Zina, Chico, Neesh - RIP

2019 has had the most sorrowful of starts for us at Compassion for Greek paws🐾.

ZINA We lost beautiful old girl Zina, ex working dog who came to us with cancer after having litter after litter, Zina went through surgery and was recovering so well then the cancer became aggressive and reached her lungs. We with the vets on call help did all we could but the when the cancer reached her lungs we had to say goodnight as she was suffering, she couldn't take in enough oxygen and only had hrs to live. The decision for Zina to go to sleep was not taken lightly, our vets all agreed she was suffering and we would only be prolonging her suffering if we didn't make the right decision. We miss her and wish we could have done more but she was loved, had a cosy kennel and due to her age and hard life had extra treats of chicken every day after her surgery. RIP sweetie, we will always remember you x

Zina
CHICO, the tiny kitten abandoned by his mum & siblings left alone and unable to feed due to his eyes being infected came to stay with us in the village, he grew strong with the most beautiful coat I have ever seen. His eyes started to heal but the infections kept coming back, we tried different treatments but the infection reached his brain, Chico was happy right up to his last moments, he wobbled a little then lay in my arms and purred and purred. He didn't understand he was very very sick and left us curled up like he was sleeping.

Chico

NEESH our handsome deaf, old dude, came to us after many years of abuse on the street, it was obvious he had been handed a bad deal as he was just adorable, loving, quiet and super sweet. Neesh was suffering from anaemia when he arrived and worried us as he was late to heal but he did, his eyes grew clear and his coat eventually began to shine. I wanted neesh to know the happiness of a home and just before he became ill, he was ready. He held his head up, he didn't shy away when stroked he was ready for his forever home then he was diagnosed with Leukaemia. I just couldn't believe this was happening, not to Neesh he had suffered enough surely. Neesh went to sleep and didn't wake up, he passed peacefully, he just went to sleep, after such a hard life his passing was peaceful, that much we can be thankful for..

Neesh, Chico, Zina run free and without pain, thank you for the pleasure of your company and love. We will never forget you xxx

They've arrived!!

Ben, Rosa and Poppet have arrived from Greece to their UK foster home where they will soon relax and recover from their journey. They have travelled through Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Belgium, France and finally the UK to start the next phase of their lives.

They will learn how to live in a house, walk through a door, see themselves in a mirror, adjust to new sounds and settle into a new routine. Offering a foster home allows the dogs to acclimatise from shelter life to family life before going onto their forever home.

If you are interested in becoming a foster carer for any of the dogs at Compassion For Greek Paws please email: compassion4greekpaws@gmail.com or send a message via the Compassion For Greek Paws Facebook page (m.me/CompassionForGreekPaws). Thank you.

Travel Chest

Would you become a friend of a shelter this summer? Many of you have been helping a long while and the shelter volunteers send you an enormous thank you. We couldn’t have got this far without you. But with more of your own friends getting involved we could be making a massive difference. Tomorrow we finally officially launch:

The Travel Chest Website

Please, please tell all your friends about the website and sign-up to the newsletter there. Wherever you are travelling there will be a shelter nearby who could do with some help. We want more holidaymakers to find out how they can do that. Just giving up one morning of your holiday will not only help socialise the dogs but lift the spirits of these wonderful local volunteers who are all truly struggling in atrocious conditions.

Little video below is when one of my oldest school friends came to walk the dogs at the Lemnos Shelter last summer. They quickly got over the shock and their hearts went out to all the really beautiful dogs who are kept in little prisons 24/7 and if it weren’t for Fotini and her amazing small team their poor sad lives would be unbearable.

So please don’t stop here! Please go and sign-up now! (www.thetravelchest.co.uk) x

Sarah Jane's Pups

Sarah one of the farm sheepdogs gave birth outside the shelter, here is the first image as they begin to explore. Sarah has been very protective of her pups so I have kept my distance, now they need extra puppy milk & mush she is much more relaxed and is quite happy for me to help out.

I have made the spot she choose as safe as possible but they will soon need a bigger space and run.Sarah will be neutered as soon as possible, the pups will need homes when they are old enough. The farmer has basically given us permission to take over care of Sarah and her pups.

Raina

After many calls over the last week about a large female dog roaming around the village & villagers complaining about yet another stray I finally spotted a very sorrowful sight walking very slowly, head and tail down absolutely soaking wet. I could only just make her out as the rain was so heavy. My first thought was why wasn't she sheltering somewhere, she was just aimlessly wondering. I drove up very slowly, stopped the car, she didn't run. speaking to her gently I could see she liked the attention sooo with the car door open I helped her in. As soon as I closed the door she was stressed, still speaking very gently we set off for the shelter where we made a makeshift kennel in the space we are getting ready for the pups. Raina relaxed a little ate and had a drink. I sat with her for a while and managed to get the large prickly grass seeds off her back and legs then I noticed the tattoo in her ear, I have scanned her but no chip..

Raina is a quiet young female and very majestic looking, she doesn't dash around just walks slowly taking in the sights. she isn't bothered by the barking dogs and has already said hello to most in the top run, getting on very well with Rusty-Jack.

When she has settle a little we will be off to the clinic for a health check then we will need a loving foster/forever home as she is actually staying in the yet to be finished off, large pen for Sarah Jane's big pups. Can anyone consider taking Raina if as a foster, I am sure her forever home will be found quickly as she is just adorable.

If you are able to offer a permanent home (adoption) or a temporary home (foster) to Raina please email: compassion4greekpaws@gmail.com or send a message via the Compassion For Greek Paws Facebook page (m.me/CompassionForGreekPaws). Thank you.

One in a Million!!

Meet Aaliyah our one in a million young female who went for spay on Tuesday (22nd Jan). She surprised our vets when they found she had not one but two uteruses. Only surprises, no complications during her surgery, Aaliyah is recovering well at the shelter.

Aaliyah is looking for her forever home, she loves to run but never far as she also loves cuddles. Although short she is heavy built weighing in at 28 kilos, she is fully grown (born August 2017).

Sister Zoe is scheduled to be spayed on Monday 28th, I wonder if we will have any more surprises.
Huge thank you to Friends of the Strays of Greece who have covered both Aaliyah & Zoe's spays xx 🐾🐾🐾🐾

Good News For Mina

Mina has been offered a home and is now reserved pending adoption. Her two sisters Brooke and Cleopatra are still looking for their forever homes.

Due to Cleopatra's very shy timid nature and that she follows her sisters everywhere it would be best for her to be homed with either her sister Brooke or in a home where there is already a mature adult dog who can give her confidence. She would not be considered suitable to be an only dog in a home environment.

Also due to her timidity she is likely to be quite a frightened dog and will need a lot of time, patience and wisdom to work with her to overcome any difficulties in going on a walk. She will need to be walked initially with both a harness and a slip lead for additional support as frightened dogs can very often slip their collars, slip the harness or pull the lead out of the handlers hand.

Brooke weighs 11 kilos and Cleopatra weighs 10 kilos. They are both ready to travel.

If you are able to offer a permanent home (adoption) or a temporary home (foster) to Brooke or Cleopatra please email: compassion4greekpaws@gmail.com or send a message via the Compassion For Greek Paws Facebook page (m.me/CompassionForGreekPaws). Thank you.

And then there were four!

Greek Shepherd puppy Luz has been offered a new home and is reserved pending adoption. That still leaves her four beautiful brothers at the shelter. Luz acts like a little mother to them so they are going to really miss her when she leaves, unless of course they all have new homes to go to as well!!

Poem:
Five little puppies left all on their own
Each one hoping for a forever home.

Vasili, Duke, Luz, Noel and Patch
All waiting to find their perfect match.

Each one is special a joy to behold
More precious than rubies, more precious than gold.

Just open your home and let the love start
A gift sent from Heaven to touch your heart

If you are interested in adopting any of these four puppies please either email: compassion4greekpaws@gmail.com or send a message via the Facebook page: m.me/CompassionForGreekPaws  Thank you.

Her name is ESMAE

Esmae ~ name meaning "esteemed, beloved".
She was found yesterday 9th January 2019 at the side of a road near a cemetery by Amanda and Joanna. Born approximately beginning of October 2018.

Esmae was wormed and had her flea treatments yesterday at the clinic, she will start her vaccinations in 10-15 days. Esmae is slightly under weight at 8.5 kg and unfortunately full of worms (not any more) she is eating well and should gain weight in no time. She is 3 months at most, her tiny baby teeth haven't separated yet so she isn't ready to loose them at the moment. This leads us to believe she will be a large dog fully grown. She is coming out of her shell and followed Poppet all around the garden this morning, she already comes running over when her name is called and loves a cuddle so we are seeing progress.

Poem ~ New Rescue
One little girl left alone in the snow
Why she was there we'll never know.

Along came two ladies with hearts of gold
"We'll take you out of the shivering cold".

A place at the shelter all cosy and warm
With love in abundamce a new day will dawn.

Your beauty shines through a real gem of a find
Uniquely created a one of a kind.

Love and compassion working together
Will find you a home that will be yours forever.

Three Sisters ~ Brooke, Mina and Cleopatra

Brooke, Mina and Cleopatra ~ These three little beauties were found in a corn field at the end of September 2018. They are thought to have been born around July 2018. The corn which is used for animal feed was still standing in the field at the time the pups were found and was due to be cut with huge machinery at any time. They were taken out of harms way by a man in the village and left at the shelter. All three sisters are happy and healthy. They have had their first and second puppy vaccinations, been wormed and are up to date with their flea treatments. They are expected to become medium sized dogs when fully grown. Cleopatra is the smallest at 10 kilos and is very shy with Brooke and Mina weighing 11 kilos.

Due to Cleopatra's very shy timid nature and that she follows her sisters everywhere it would be best for her to be homed with either one of her sisters (Brooke or Mina) or in a home where there is already a mature adult dog who can give her confidence.

If you are able to offer a permanent home (adoption) or a temporary home (foster) to Brooke, Mina or Cleopatra please email: compassion4greekpaws@gmail.com or send a message via the Compassion For Greek Paws Facebook page (m.me/CompassionForGreekPaws).
