Review of 2019 at Compassion For Greek Paws

January 2019
The month started off with the sad news that both Zina and Neesh died. Zina died from Cancer and Neesh from Leukemia. They were both older dogs and will be missed. Little kitten Chico also lost his battle for life. New arrivals included Esmae and Raina. Esmae was rescused from the snow at the side of the road by a cemetery and Raina was found wandering around the village lost after being dumped. Preparations were made for Sarah Jane's six pups to be taken into the shelter. Aika and Mina were adopted into forever loving homes and Luz was offered a home. Ben, Rosa and Poppet went to a foster home in the UK together. Aaliyah and Zoe were neutered which went well and it was discovered that Aaliyah had two wombs!

February 2019
The month started off with foster pup Poppet finding her forever home within a few days of arriving in the UK. Noel was reserved pending adoption and went to training before travelling to his new home. Young pup Buddy was rescued and discovered to be deaf. After a short time he received an offer of a foster home. Sam was also rescued from the streets and thought to be the brother of Bonita (adopted), Megan and Spot. Poor street dog Blondie was hit by a car which injured her front paw quite badly. She has since made a full recovery and her paw is intact. She is currently in Amandas care awaiting her forever home. Six week old pups Jamie and Jessie were abandoned outside the shelter and became the latest members of Compassion For Greek Paws. Three poorly pups were dumped at the shelter. Arthur the weakest who struggled to walk/crawl and unfortunately died after just a few days, Alfie with an infected eye that will eventually need to be removed and Archie the strongest of the three. Grayson who was adopted last autumn and had slipped his collar a few weeks later was found and rescued on Valentines day after 12 weeks loose in open countryside to the relief of everyone concerned about his disappearance.Sarah Jane's pups were given names: Sally, Sadie, Sian, Ned, Nathan and Neil.

March 2019
Alfie received some good news, as it appears he can see a little from his poorly eye. The cause of the problems being identified as inverted eye lashes which can be corrected with minor surgery when he is a little older. Luz first adoption fell through in February however she was very quickly offered another home and will make a wonderful addition to her new family as she has such a beautiful loving mothering nature. Greek Shepherd pup Noel was renamed Panda by his new owners and went to training school before travelling at his new home. Sarah Jane's pups Ned, Sadie and Sian were all adopted. We received a litter of 6 pups, 5 girls and 1 boy all of whom are adorable and were named Aaron, Amy, Lyndi, Lottie, Kiera & Katie. Funds were raised to build a new pen for them. The total number of pups at Compassion For Greek Paws this month piqued again at 20 with the overall shelter number at 70. The 23rd of March saw National Puppy Day celebrated with a post showing all of our beautiful babies looking gorgeous.Esmae returned from training school with an A plus!

April 2019
Cassie went for her neuter at the start of the month. Compassion For Greek Paws started a YouTube channel to share videos and raise awareness of the shelter.New arrivals Billi and Benji were left outside the shelter gate at around 2 months old. The Spring/Summer 2019 adoption photo slideshow was released to highlight all the dogs at the shelter and Ben and Rosa in foster in the hope of finding them new homes. Bailey was found outside the church on the 22 April he is a pointer cross puppy. This new addition takes the total number of residents to 73!

May 2019

The Spring clean took place white washing the brick kennels to kill any bacteria. A new large kennel for the pups was built. The shade nets went up together with three secure wooden ones in Spot and Megans pen, Beatrice's pen and in Duke, Patch, Vasili, Brooke and Cleopatra's pen. A new secure gate was erected in the middle of the run allowing two pens to be out for a run at the same time. A wonderful charity for Greek animals in Finland named Argos Animal Rescue Greece helped provide the shelter with the flea, tick and mosquito treatments. Little Lottie began to be bullied by her siblings so had to move to another pen. Archie scratched his eye and was moved to Amanda's house temporarily so she could keep a close watch on him.The shelter was offered 5 brand new pens including labour for a discounted price. Half of the cost was donated by Friends of the Strays of Greece and the rest by individual supporters who together managed to cover the balance. Buddy travelled to his foster home in the UK.

June 2019
This month started with the wonderful news that Ezra was being adopted by Amanda! "Raise The Roof" fund raising project was launched to generate enough finances to pay for all the pens at the shelter to have roofs on. This will help to protect the dogs from the extreme temperatures, cold winds and blazing sun. New arrival Vixen (or Vixi for short) was found with a mark on her neck from a gun shot which fortunately had not penetrated her skin due to her thick winter coat still being present. Amanda's sister and brother in law did a sponsored climb to the top of Mount Olympus to raise funds for the shelter. A beautiful chocolate new boy joined the shelter. Alfie had his eye surgery to remove the inner eyelids and to sew the skin together over the space where his eye would have been (he was born with just one eye). Christie arrived at the shelter very underweight after being abandoned.

July 2019
We kicked off our Charity Status fundraising appeal at the beginning of July to be able to apply to become a registered charity. Started with a target of £600 and was greatly encouraged to have nearly  half generously donated before the appeal was widely known to our supporters. Food supplies were very low again. We have a wonderful deal with the vets who have discounted a bag of food to just 15 euros for our shelter. Greek Shepherd pup Neil has been reserved by a wonderful family who have chosen to rename him Monty. Bailey has also been reserved.A very strong storm blew through the shelter causing damage to fencing, pens and shade netting. Thankfully no one was hurt and all the dogs were ok. Supporters rallied around and donated which enabled the necessary supplies to be ordered and the repair work to be carried out. After the storm and clear up there was an earthquake!! Again no one was hurt. Three pups and their mum were found on the edge of the main road causing distress to Amanda as the shelter was completely full and she was unable to take them in. After appealing for help a wonderful lady came forward to foster the pups. They will spend the summer and autumn by the beach whilst we continue to promote their desperate need for forever homes. The mum, Marta unfortunately had to be left on the road and has been visited and given food daily by Amanda. She will arrange for Marta to be neutered and when there is space at the shelter she will rescue her off the streets. Brothers Duke, Patch and Vasili went for neuter all are doing well. Brooke was treated to a pamper day at the groomers as a kind lady handed Amanda a donation to pay for it.

August 2019
Brookes sister Cleopatra was also treated to a pamper day sponsored by a kind supporter of the shelter. The shelter was contacted about a pregnant Kokoni dog that had been hit by a car. She was rushed to the vets who x-rayed and discovered that one of her back legs was broken in two places leaving the bone inbetween floating and needing emergency surgery. The shelters amazing supporters rallied round and managed to raise the 400 euros necessary. When the surgeons operated they discovered the bone had been shattered and was much worse than anticipated although they managed to save her leg and she should have full use of it once recovered. However her pups sadly didn't make it. Lady one of the roadside pups in a temporary foster home took to swimming in the sea straight away. Her brothers soon followed suit and all three of them enjoy the water. Compassion For Greek Paws shared their first posts on Instagram about the roadside pups Dylan, Tobias and Lady. We have gained 87 supporters already this month and hope to see the audience grow on this new social media platform. Good news for Amy and Billi who are reserved pending adoption once there is space for them to travel. A little Griffon mix boy Alvin was rehomed after the owners had an accident and were unable to keep him. Pippa or Pip was found and taken in by Amanda. She is only 5.5 kilos and is adorable estimated to be around 6-12 months old. We celebrated National Dog Day on the 26th August with a post showing all our gorgeous puppies ready for adoption. Thanks to the very generous donation from Friends of The Strays of Greece and their supporters the cost for the shelter roof was reached and the work commenced 27th August. Rosa was adopted by her temporary foster family who were covering the holiday period but absolutely fell in love with her.  Zoe went for her first pamper day which was paid for by a supporter of the shelter. Marta the mum of the road side pups was adopted.

September 2019
Adopted pup Luz was unfortunately returned to the care of Compassion For Greek Paws and went into kennels temporarily until a suitable foster or forever home could be found. Amy travelled to her forever home which unfortunately didn't work out so she went into foster care in the UK. Bugsy arrived at the beginning of the month at around 2 months old weighing only 2 kilos. Finley arrived a few days latter also a small male pup who could be Bugsy's brother.  We celebrated the 4th anniversary of Compassion For Greek Paws on the 15th September. On the 17th September, Koritsi Mou found 4 young pups in a plastic bag that had been dumped in a ditch. They still had their eyes closed indicating they were less than two weeks old. They started to open their eyes on the 24th September 2019 so they were born between 10-14 September 2019. Another abandoned pup (ChiĆ³ni) was found towards the end of the month making a total of 26 pups either at the shelter or at Amanda's home with another 4 in foster in Greece and the UK. There are now just over 80 dogs being cared for by Compassion For Greek Paws not including the street dogs and homed dogs.

October 2019
Greek Shepherd Neil renamed Monty travelled to his new home but unfortunately wasn't accepted by one of the existing dogs so he went into foster in the UK. Billi also travelled to her forever home and is started to settle in very well. The 'bag pups' received names: Hank, Moses, Maggie-May and Edgar and started to lap milk enabling Amanda to get some well needed sleep! Beauty who is 2 and a half suddenly became paralysed in her hind legs on the 13th October with a suspected slip disc in her back. She was taken for an MRI scan in Thessaloniki on Tuesday 15th October where she was diagnosed with Thoracolumbar syndrome. Beauty went for a second appointment on the 21st October. Amanda was contacted about a 5 week old female puppy that had been found and kept safe until she could pick her up. She was given the name Minnie and being such a cutie was reserved very quickly! We had a number of dogs reserved this month: Bono, King, Zoe, Maggie-May and Moses. A very kind hearted young lady who has already adopted from Compassion For Greek Paws totally fell in love with Beauty and moved by her health issues reserved her pending adoption once she had fully recovered and able to travel. Timmy a hunting dog was finally rescued by Amanda after a short period of time feeding him from a distance whilst gaining his trust.

November 2019
Beauty had surgery on her spine on the 4th November to enable her to walk again. By the 16th November Beauty was able to stand and balance on her own and began trying to walk again. The 'Bag Pups' continued to grow strong and healthy. Good news for Aaliyah and Jacob who were reserved pending adoption.Lianta, a friend of Amanda from the UK living in Greece joined Team Compassion on Friday 15 November 2019. She is a God send, a real blessing to have an extra pair of helping hands. Bono one of our longest residents who has been at the shelter from the very beginning was finally adopted!! King also travelled to his new forever family. We took in another abandoned dog a little girl named Tillie who weighs just 4 and a half kilos. She arrived with a broken hind leg and was booked for surgery at the beginning of December. Work progressed with the roof at the shelter enabling Vixen and Hickory to have a cover over their pen after the builder recovered from falling off his ladder. Preparations were made to get the shelter ready for winter.

December 2019
Timmy went for neuter ready to travel to his foster home. Beauty stood up all by herself and moved all four legs without assistance for the first time since her surgery last month. We are thrilled to see her making progress and that she has a home waiting for her once she is fully recovered. We launched the Compassion For Greek Paws Christmas Advent on the blog, Facebook page and Instagram. We also ran a very successful Christmas dinner sponsorship for each of the dogs at the shelter and their friends. People have been very supportive and generous to donate to this fundraiser and we truly appreciate each and every one of them, thank you so much. Tillie's surgery went well and she is in recovery. She is such a tiny cute girl that she is reserved already and will be transported to her new home once she is fit and well to travel. Another new arrival Felicia a young pup around 5 months was found in desperate need of a home. She looks a lot like Jessey's younger sister they are so similar looking. 'Road Pups' Dylan, Tobias (Toby) and Lady returned to the care of Compassion For Greek Paws after their foster placement over the summer and autumn months ended. We are hopeful that someone will offer them wonderful homes soon so they don't have to spend too long at the shelter.  Keira was beginning to walk, run and stand strangely so she was taken for an x-ray where it was discovered that she has hip/joint problems in both her hind legs. Amanda's husband Aristo started to help at the shelter one day a week on his day off. He is proving to be such an asset and is also helping the dogs to get used to male company so that they aren't afraid of men. The latest new arival is Meli a beautiful Kokoni mix who was seen being dumped and was thankfully taken straight away to the shelter. She is thought to be a young dog around 2-3 years old weighing about 5kgs.

KEIRA šŸ’–

Stunningly beautiful, sweet natured Keira began walking, running and standing strangely over the last couple of weeks.

We noticed this periodically so decided X-rays were needed.

As you can see Keira has indeed hip/joint problems.

Further discussions with our vets will help us decide the best possible direction we take for Kiera in the near future.

Joy

Joy ~ born approximately April/May 2016. Joy is a beautiful girl and has come on well in recent months. Joy was abandoned at the shelter at just 3 months old. This poor girl was so frightened she was initially unpredictable towards strangers, but not aggressive. However, Joy spent two months at a dedicated dog training school where they worked on her behaviour. She is a very bright, loving girl who smiles with pure joy during her run and cuddle time. Joy needs an experienced dog handler/owner and will not be homed in a young family environment.

If you are interested in adopting Joy, please contact us via email: compassion4greekpaws@gmail.com or via Messenger: m.me/CompassionForGreekPaws  thank you.
