Compassion For Greek Paws Review of 2020

January 2020
Greek Animal Rescue (GAR) blessed us with a wonderful pallet full of goodies for all the dogs at the shelter. Gorgeous pup Felicia was taken to training school and graduated as an A+ student! After training school she went straight into a wonderful forever loving home in the UK. Road pup Toby went off his food for a few days after changing his environment from a foster home to life at the shelter.  Meli and Lottie were neutered prior to going into foster. Archie who was also neutered has some issues and will be going to White Ghosts K9 training school. Nathan was starting to show signs of stress when leaving the shelter to go on vet runs or just out and about so he went to training school to help build his confidence. He has been trained in basic commands, lead training and socialisation.  Beautiful pup Esmae went for neuter. A Jack Russell Terrier came into the care of Compassion For Greek Paws, a former homed dog no longer wanted. A new Facebook Group was created for people who have either adopted or fostered a dog from Compassion For Greek Paws to facilitate community amongst those who have reached out and provided homes for the dogs from the shelter.

A number of dogs travelled to their forever or foster homes - Beauty, Maggie-May, Moses (Ozzie), Edgar, Hank, Pip, Lottie, Meli and Felicia.

February 2020
Compassion For Greek Paws was contacted and asked to take in a blind and deaf pup found in a field in Skyros. Our wonderful supporters rallied around to provide the funding for his transportation, vaccination, bloods and passport. His plight was shared on Instagram by Saving Every Stray and a wonderful lady offered to adopt him immediately. He was given the name SOZO. Unfortunately only a few days after going into foster care in Greece he passed away and left us all sorrowful but grateful for having known him even for such a short time, he touched our hearts deeply.  Laura, Lyndi, Aaron, Keira and Nathan went for neuter and Timmy was adopted as his foster mum fell in love with him. Madison was found abandoned towards the end of the hunting season very thin and suffering from heartworm. Aurora a stunning Husky mix was rescued by a kind man who found her abandoned wandering the streets. She was so dirty that her coat had become grey and black but a bath revealed her beautiful white and golden coat underneath. Finances were raised to cover the cost of corrective surgery for a street dog named Roulis whose eyelashes were inverted in both eyes making it very difficult for him to see. The Jack Russell Terrier given into the care of Compassion For Greek Paws last month was named Iraklis (hercules) and was quickly reserved for adoption.

March 2020
Great news for Lottie and Meli as they were both adopted within weeks of going into their foster homes. Compassion For Greek Paws became a resgistered animal welfare group within Greece. We welcomed new arrival Cory a pup around 6 months who was being abused by the local children which left him traumatised and frightened.

April 2020
The beautiful Amy was adopted after spending time in foster in the UK. The second half of the shelter roof was erected which has been very generously paid for by Friends Of The Strays of Greece. A section of the roof was painted white to repel the sun away from an area where it was getting far too hot for comfort. The fundraiser campaign was launched to pay for Billi to go into rehabilitation training to deal with her guarding issues. Luz and Billi were transferred to the rehabilitation kennels with the donations from our generous supporters whom we cannot thank enough for caring about these two wonderful young dogs in need of help. The big spring clean took place, clearing out the old hay and cleaning all the pens. New adoption slideshows were released one for the boys available for adoption, one for the girls and one for the young dogs under 2 years. Our social media channels are continuing to increase with 2,559 page likes on Facebook, 248 followers on Instagram and 48 followers on Twitter. Super adorable puppy Brynn arrived at the end of the month, approx 12 weeks old. He had been run over by a car and scraped the skin under his front legs and chest.

Brynn's four adorable siblings were rescued: Ralphy, Sirius, Simba and their sister Beth who is similar looking to Brynn. Such beautiful bundles of joy and delight all looking for their forever homes. Alfie went for neuter and all went well. A delightful female puppy was abandoned at the shelter and was quickly named Demi. She is thought to be around 3-4 months old and possibly a Greek Shepherd mix. Changes were made to the shelter to help the dogs adapt to sights and sounds that will become familiar to them in their forever homes to help them be more prepared for life outside their normal environment.

June 2020
Another 6 pups were found that had been dumped in a vast open space where wild animals roam. The boys wer named Bear & Richie and the girls were named Rosie, Nelly, Keri & Arabina. Four days after this litter the shelter was given two new arrivals a brother and sister Percy & Bonnie. So that's 14 new pups in around 6 weeks!! The shelter is heaving with 80 dogs in our care plus 4 being housed at the training school, Goldie on the streets and Bobsy in the village.Wow another 7 "mountain" pups arrived adding to our puppy tally. And just before the month ended 3 more puppies were found thin and exhausted suspected to be the siblings of Percy and Bonnie. So now the puppy tally has grown to 24 in two months. Our wonderful admin team has worked hard to process the many applications and as a result 14 pups are reserved and will travel when they are old enough and they have finished their vacinations. Angel, one of our 3 little poorly girl pups, moved to Heaven on the 29th June just three days after being found. Ginger joined her sister Angel on the 30 June 2020 leaving just Pebble left  still fighting for survival.

November 2020

Two sweet little 5 month pups were taken into the shelter. The boy, Hugo was found with a rope around his neck in a field and the timid girl, Hettie was found wandering the streets. Within a very short space of time Hugo was reserved for adoption. Luz having excelled during her time at the rehabilitation Centre was adopted by the rehabilitation centre to become part of the team. We are thrilled for her to have her new beginning and enjoy life being surrounded by dogs and familar people who she has grown to love. Well done Luz, you are going to be such a blessing to so many dogs. Our dear beloved Amanda Maguire Deligianni, the founder of Compassion For Greek Paws died suddenly on the 18th November 2020. She touched the lives of so many people and rescued countless dogs working tirelessly day in and day out. She is the very life breath of Compassion For Greek Paws and without her it will never be the same again. We love her, admire her, honour her and deeply miss her. It has come as such a shock and it is so hard to accept that she has rescued her last dog and gone on into eternity. She will forever live in our hearts. We love you Amanda Jane xxxxxxxxx

December 2020

We are grateful for all the help and support that we have been given following the tragic news about our beautiful Amanda. We are still grieving and for the time being are taking it one day at a time, keeping the shelter ticking over and continuing the best we can.  We held our third annual Christmas dinner sponsorship for the dogs knowing that Amanda was looking forward to it going ahead. It was a very successful fundraiser, thank you to everyone who generously donated. Sponsorships for the dogs have been pressing ahead and we are so grateful for all those that have taken our dogs to heart and care for them through this form of support. Travelling this month are: Alben, Dylan, Jack, Bruce, Bonnie, Percy and Nala. Our social media presence has continued to grow. We now have 420 followers on Instagram, 74 on Twitter and 3,238 likes on our Facebook page. Thank you to everyone for sharing our posts throughout the year and helping to raise awareness of Compassion For Greek Paws.
